From the minute you find out you're pregnant it stops being about you and starts being about that little one. BUT in order to make that little one as happy and healthy as possible, you shouldn't forget about you! You decide which are essential and which aren't - to each her own.
Prenatal vitamins: if you're trying to become pregnant, you want to start taking these then. Make a cozy little home for your babe. I've used Metagenics (you need a provider for these), Ritual, and HUM just came out with one that I'm taking now. Mainly, you want to make sure it has DHA and folic acid in it. (Also you will want to keep taking a prenatal if you're nursing...don't get scammed by switching to a postnatal - they are the same). The reason I switch to a different one postnatal is that Metagenics comes from a provider so that's an extra step in getting it, it's expensive, and there's a lot of pills in the vitamin pack. With Charlotte I did Ritual but they have a lemon or mint taste to them that I don't like. Phil and I use HUM vitamins daily so I decided to try their new prenatal - I like it so far! Here's my code if you want to try HUM - anything not just prenatal.
Over the counter items: somethings aren't safe during pregnancy, so if you have an ailment that Tylenol isn't going to cure, make sure you check with your doctor first. My doctor lists these as safe and you may want to buy some of them before you need them - just to have on hand. Fever: Tylenol (NO ASA) regular or extra strength in the normal adult dosage Gas: Gas-X, Tums, Phazyme Heartburn: Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Nexium, Protonix, Pepcid AC, Prevacid, Zantac (NO Prilosec) Headaches: Tylenol, Category C = Fioricet, Vicodin, Tylenol #3, Stadol NS Hemorrhoids: Preparation H, Anusol HC, Tucks Pads, Analapram HC 2% Rx Insomnia: Unisom tabs, Benadryl, Tylenol PM, NO Melatonin I'd like to add that magnesium is something you should add to your prenatals and beyond. It helps with the restless legs during pregnancy and the night sweats postpartum. You will also eat tums like candy. I don't get heartburn or acid reflux when I'm not pregnant but when I am, I go through a lot of Tums.
Pregnancy pillow: this may be an unpopular opinion but I hated the big-ass pregnancy pillow. You will have to pee a lot when you're pregnant and having to reset that thing up every time I got up was a no-go for me. I'm a stomach sleeper so not being able to sleep on my stomach for months on end, sucks. I also suffer from pregnancy insomnia so being as comfortable as possible is huge for me. The Boppy side-sleeper pillow was a game changer. They have a wedge type too, but if you alternate which side you sleep on, get the side sleeper. **I've been using my side sleeper still, but up higher to support my full boobs at night - because gravity is not your friend. This has also been a game changer.**
Bao Bei support band: I tried to stay as active as possible with both pregnancies. To support the growing belly and help with diastasis recti (splitting of the abdominals), round ligament pain, hernia, low back pain, SPD, pelvic pressure - this is a must have. I used it postpartum for workouts too until I felt strong enough to do it on my own. It's truly a sports bra for your belly. Order your pre-pregnancy size.
Lotion: I'm a always using body lotion type girl but your skin will be extra dry and tight when you're pregnant. I used this Burt's Bees Belly Butter with both girls and didn't get any more stretch marks than I started with. That could be lotion, that could be genetics. Either way, you want that bump to be moisturized.
Leggings: I live in leggings already, when you're pregnant there's nothing better than finally reaching the point where you can wear pregnancy leggings without them falling down. Especially having winter babies, leggings are so cozy. My favorite maternity legging brands are: Pure Luxe by Fabletics and Zella Mamasana. The Lululemon Align leggings and joggers are also 10/10 and the best part is they fit pre, during and after pregnancy. If you go joggers, get a size up.
Shirts: Don't break the bank buying all new stuff. Depending on the time of the year you are pregnant - you can probably use a lot of the things you already own. I'd recommend getting basic shirts and tank tops. Then pair those with sweaters, zip ups, etc that you already have. If you're pregnant in the summer, dresses make it even easier!
Jeans: were a fun thing -- when I was pregnant with Charlotte skinny jeans were still cool - so I bought those. Then two years later, not cool anymore so I had to start over. I ended up getting a bunch of wide leg jeans from Old Navy this time and like them. Old Navy has great maternity stuff.
Compression socks: you need them. Comrad are $$ but they rock. Just get them. You will already be doing a lot of laundry because you are not going to spend all your money on maternity clothes, so get the 3 or 5 pack. If you're pregnant in the summer or its really not going to work with your outfit, put them on when you get home for a few hours. Your feet and calves will thank you. Here's my referral code.
Speaking of compression: at the end (or not the end if you're on your second+ baby) when your belly is heavy, these tanks are amazing
Shoes: Your feet will likely grow and postpartum you'll need to buy more shoes -- so don't buy a whole new closet of shoes during your pregnancy. However, you want something comfortable especially if you're on your feet all day at work. Both my girls are winter, so I spent a lot of time in Ugg boots and my APL tennis shoes. I also rocked Birkenstocks only until it was boot weather. The sandals and the clogs are great because you don't have to bend over to put them on. That's real.
Get a water bottle you love. If you don't already have an emotional support water bottle, get one.
